Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are common injuries that occur when ligaments are stretched or torn. An ankle sprain is the most common athletic injury. Nearly 85% of ankle sprains occur laterally, on the outside of the ankle.
Most sprains occur when participating in sports or by twisting the ankle when walking on an uneven surface. Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the sprain.
Signs and Symptoms
Ankle is tender, swollen and discolored
Painful to the touch
Walking is usually difficult
A feeling of instability may occur
Diagnosis and Treatment
Initial treatment includes rest, ice, compression and elevation, RICE. This will decrease pain and reduce swelling around the ankle joint. In more severe injuries, non-weight bearing, and immobilization may be needed. Ankle sprains may take several weeks to heal and may require physical therapy and a gradual return to activity. Dr. Hanawalt will work with you on a plan to return to your former activity level.
